San Pedro de Atacama - Uyuni

The Laguna Verde route is easily the most stunning in Bolivia: fossilized trees, surreal desert landscapes and red rock for endless miles - riding this route, I felt like I was on another planet.

There is no road - the track is used solely by 4x4 drivers and bikers; you can't get to Uyuni by bus or train from there - the only way is taking a jeep tour or riding your bike.

Once you ascend from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile and cross the Bolivian border, the road becomes a mere track in the sand. It splits into two or three tracks running off in different directions from time to time, so if you're slightly topographically challenged like myself it can get pretty hard to figure out where you need to go. Its mostly sand or gravel with a few muddy sections, a few water crossings, and a few hard packed dirt sections.

The track sometimes winds well over 5 km above the sea level, so be prepared for the joys of altitude sickness and shortness of breath!

There is no fuel between San Pedro and Uyuni, but worst case scenario, you can probably buy petrol from the locals in San Cristobal or Alota. The very few villages along the tracks are sparsely populated by the indigenous people of the Andean atliplano; they aren't exactly thrilled to see you, but they will sell you food and possibly even a couple of beers.

The views are absolutely worth it, though. There's no one around for hundreds of miles; the Salvador Dali desert is named very aptly - the landscape is so surreal it's hard to believe you're still on planet Earth.

Ultimate solitude, utter wilderness and incredible nature - that's the Laguna Verde route.
