I first visited Bhutan in 2009, and was one of the first bikers to ride across the country. Bhutan only opened for tourists some time in the 1970's, and there aren't many today either because the Bhutan visa costs 250 USD per day.

Bhutan is often called a real life Shangri-La, because the the well being of the Bhutanese people is measured not by GDP but by the index of happiness. The environment is protected by Constitution, the population is largely Buddhist, and everyone is so friendly, chilled out and respectful that it's absolutely incredible - especially if you've just crossed from India. The people in Bhutan are completely different; they're very peaceful and very accommodating. Most people speak English, fuel availability is great, and riding is easy - there is only one motorable road in the whole country. It's only partially paved, but the off road sections aren't difficult.

Bhutan is tiny, but everything is very concentrated - you get to see the mountains, the jungle and the snow - capped peaks all in one day. Most of the peaks have not been climbed though - it's forbidden to ascend to the mountains higher than 6 km so as to not anger the gods. Bhutan is a strange but very awesome mix of 16th century countryside and modern day cities - most people still wear traditional clothing and live off the land, but a lot of them speak perfect English and want to travel.

Bhutan is definitely worth a visit as it's absolutely unique in the whole Himalaya region.

Į Butaną pirmą kartą išsiruošiau 2009 metais ir turbūt buvau viena pirmų motociklininkių, pervažiavusių visą šalį. Butanas turistams atsivėrė tik 1970 metais, ir užsieniečių čia net šiandien nėra daug, nes Butano viza vienai dienai kainuoja 250 JAV dolerių.

Butanas dažnai vadinamas Šangri-La žemėje: gamtos apsauga čia užtikrinta Konstitucijoje, o žmonių gerbūvis matuojamas ne ekonominiais rodikliais, bet laimės indeksu. Butane veikia laimės institutas, kasmet pateikiantis ataskaitas apie žmonių savijautą; kiek žinau, Butanas yra viena laimingiausių šalių pasaulyje.

Įvažiavus į Butaną iš Indijos, šokiruoja milžiniški kontrastai: butaniečiai - be galo mandagūs, paslaugūs ir ramūs žmonės. Eismas nei iš tolo neprimena indiško chaoso - čia vairuotojai ne tik ištisai nepypsina ir nebando nustumti tavęs nuo šlaito, bet net užleidžia kelią. Butanas yra budistinė šalis, žmonės čia nepaprastai draugiški, dauguma puikiai kalba angliškai, degalinių yra visur - važiuoti motociklu čia tikrai lengva ir nepavojinga.

Butanas - labai maža šalis, tačiau viskas čia yra koncentruota - per vieną dieną galima pamatyti kalnus, džiungles ir sniegą. Kelias per visą šalį yra tik vienas ir didžiąja dalimi asfaltuotas, todėl dideli iššūkiai negresia, o pasiklysti - beveik neįmanoma. man Butanas - unikaliausia Himalajų regiono šalis, kurią tiesiog privalu pamatyti!
