Leaving the main boring roads for seeing the real Mongolia. The road to Tsengel is simple and beautiful, stunning views.

Fuel can be found in Tsengel. After is around 220 km before next fuel station, 15-20 liters are needed as in some points are "1st gear and full throttle"
After Tsengel the fun part, the road easily goes up to the Khovd lake, after it, the road gets wild. I passed through it in 2018 when it was raining a lot in the region (The main southern road in Mongolia was closed as flooded). High fords, some almost 60 centimeters deep. Then it opens up before going through a swamp where there is no actual road, for reaching a plateau at 3000 masl which is also an huge swamp.
It shouldn't be problematic if the season is dry as it should have been but well, global warming is happening so watch out. Finding shelter by locals during an hailstorm was an experience. Sitting in a house with water flowing in from everywhere, not being able to communicate, but being offered fried bread and cheese is amazing. And yes, eating the cheese knowing already that it would have had bad consequences on the stomach is a must.
